DLM 100,000 Sq Ft Sale Saturday

What are you doing tomorrow? Wanna deal on some designer clothes and housewares? How about 80-90% off names like Nicole Miller, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren? Even if you have never heard of DLM or know where the City of Commerce is located, you will want to get to know both if you would like to pay wholesale prices for merchandise that is normally sold in department stores like Bloomingdale's, Macy's, and Kohl's.

Whether you are shopping for a man, woman, a child, or your house, there will be something in the 100,000 square foot warehouse for you. Prices mean that you could pay about $5 for an item that retails for $60, or $60 for an item that retails for $500. What makes all the difference at this sale is the quality you get for your money.

The warehouse is only open once a month on the last Saturday of the month, so that is tomorrow. The sale starts at 8:30am and goes until 4:30pm at 2343 Saybrook Ave, Commerce, CA 90040. Remember to wear your walking shoes and bring some water because you will want to hydrate during your shopping marathon; ready, set, shop!

Parking, Plates, and a Pool

There are a few pleasures in Los Angeles that make living here close to being in Heaven; finding easy parking, eating fabulous food without having to fight for a table, and enjoying a poolside lounge on the shore. What if you could have all three? Would that make Los Angeles the utopia that everyone sees in the movies?

There are many places I don't even bother going because of the lack of parking, and that goes for events too, especially when there is a sold out event at Staples Center or the Nokia Theater. Park Whiz now has a lot downtown which guarantees you a prime parking spot for $20, and you don't have to worry about having cash or finding a free spot. You reserve your space online for the date you want, print out the receipt and show up at the structure with your prepaid proof. It is nice to know in advance you have a space and that it is already prepaid; it just makes it so much more enjoyable to attend any event downtown.

Getting good food is easy, but can be pricey and time consuming, especially if you are trying to lose some weight and eat properly. Z.E.N. (Zero Effort Nutrition) is a food delivery service that provides breakfast, lunch, a snack, and dinner delivered to you for whatever your dietary desires dictate (say that three times fast). You can choose to lose weight, gain weight, avoid certain foods because of allergies, stabilize your blood sugar, or lower your cholesterol. It all costs about $50 a day and they offer discounts for mutiple day packages ranging from 5-90 days. The beauty of this service is that it is tailored for your needs and tastes (is you hate beans, there will not be any in the meals) and they provide fresh and tasty meals that are delivered so you don't have to fight traffic to get your food. Considering that dinner and lunch out could easily cost $50, this deal not only provides more food (breakfast and a snack), but food that is designed with your body's needs in mind.

People come to Los Angeles all year around because the weather is so good, after all, where else can you sunbathe on the beach in December? Casa Del Mar is the restored bath house on Santa Monica Beach which is now home to a hotel with a pool. How fitting that locals can now buy pool passes for a year of use (no blackout dates) through Club Casa De Mar. You also get access to the fitness center, 25% discount off spa services, and one night in the Penthouse with breakfast and 2 massages. All this luxury is yours for $2,500 a year, which is less than $7 a day, and you probably spend more than that on your vente soy lattes.

Westside Food Fest

I love combining things I love, like food and charity; this Saturday you can go to Venice High between 12 noon and 4pm to enjoy the Westside Food Fest, where you can taste food from 14 food trucks, like Fishlips Sushi, Ahn-Joo, Del's, and the SweetsTruck, so there is something for everyone whether you want something savory and spicy or sweet and tangy. You can listen to live music, participate in raffles for Dugout Dodgers tickets, an autographed Derek Fisher basketball, or a signed lithograph by Metin Bereketli.

All this only costs $5 and all event proceeds will go directly to programs for low-income children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Breakfast at Bistro Laurent

It is a rare morning when I am awake in time to try breakfast anywhere since I rarely get up before 11am (yes, you may envy me). But on the rare occasion when I actually see morning in the PST time zone, I enjoy going out for breakfast. I had to wait for a service that required an early morning appointment and I was in the vicinity of Bistro Laurent, so I passed the time by having breakfast at this very cute cafe. I loved walking into this intimate clean space with jazzy French music. It was nice to see a diverse clientele of business, locals, and tourists all frequently this new cafe. The counter displayed some very impressive pastries with croissants and pain au chocolat that were bigger than three would be in Paris, but this is the US where I guess French pastries are super sized just like everything else here. Service is very effiecient and friendly with a server who actually spoke French (always a plus when eating in a French bistro).

I ordered an orange juice that was at least 14 ounces, made of freshly squeezed juice that was good enough to finish.

For my breakfast, I chose the waffle with blueberries. It was a beautiful plate, with fresh cut melons and plump blueberries. I was only disappointed with how the waffle was a bit soggy because it was soaked with blueberry juice from the macerated blueberries. The waffle itself was nice and chewy with a crunch in the parts that had not been blueberried and I did not even use the syrup. The waffle was huge and I could only manage to eat half of it, but not for lack of trying, only for lack of stomach space; the waffle had about a 12" diameter!

One day I will wake up before noon again, and when that day comes I may come back and try something else on the menu here, but more than likely I will share it with someone else because the portions here are enormous.

Bastide Mondays

Mondays can be a good day of the week because you can drink and eat all you want from 5-7pm at Bastide for only $15, starting today. For the price, you will even have a choice of three wines, soju martinis and a cocktail. For nibbles, you get bites of yellowtail tartare.

Of course if you get hungry after your bites and drinks, stick around for dinner; like the Black Cod with shitaake mushrooms, fava beans, arugula, and a coconut mussel broth ($31), the Steak with peas, mac and cheese and bone marrow au jus ($32), or the Pork Chop with grain mustard potatoes, long beans, fried almonds, and apple rosemary sauce ($36). Don't forget to save room for dessert, like the chocolate souffle with rum vanilla ice cream and a mango chocolate sauce.

Bastide may make you like Mondays from now on; well maybe not the day, but Monday evenings could definitely be more fun.

BLD

Now that my favorite restaurant, Grace, has closed to move to their new location downtown in the Vibiana Cathedral slated to open next year, now the only restaurant which showcases their wonderful food is BLD (which stands for Breakfast Lunch Dinner). I went with my friend Ro for lunch today and was so happy to find the quality has remained and the service has improved remarkably since my last visit here.

Ro chose the house made turkey sausage frittata with oven dried tomato, arugula, feta cheese, choice of bread and potatoes (she substituted a salad for the potatoes and skipped the bread because of a gluten allergy) for $13. She loved the house made sausage in her frittata and literally cleaned her plate, so I can safely say he loved her meal.

I chose the grilled lamb burger, made with feta cheese, tsatsiki sauce, grilled marinated onions, french fries or salad (I chose the salad) $16. This was a great rendition of a lamb burger with enough zest from the grilled marinated onions and feta to balance out the rich meat and a nice creamy tsatsiki on the side to add moisture to the grilled patty for anyone so inclined. I loved the toasted bun that was both chewy and soft, with a nice texture that was irresistible. I even loved the half pickle on the side which added both a spicy and crunchy counterpoint to the richness of the burger.

Somehow we both had enough room for dessert so we chose the Meyer lemon ripple cheesecake made with a gingersnap crust $6 which we completely devoured between the two of us. The ripple of lemon was our favorite part, but since the ripple was throughout the dessert, we didn't have to fight over our forkfuls.

Lunch is always a nice way to spend time with a good friend, but it's even nicer when it included great food and good service.

Wilshire for $15 & Capital Grille Comes to LA

Wilshire restaurant has a beautiful patio so you can dine outdoors surrounded by greenery in the balmy summer nights of Los Angeles, but in their sleek sexy bar area, you can now have dinner with a glass of wine, beer, or a specialty cocktail for only $15. Menu selections are Steak Frites on Mondays, Polenta Fried Chicken with corn salad on Tuesday, Meatloaf with egg and smashed red bliss potatoes on Wednesday, Mussel Frites on Thursday, Fish & Chips on Friday, and spaghetti, meatballs and garlic bread on Saturdays.

One of the reasons I go to Las Vegas is to eat at Capital Grille, but starting July 26, I can just drive over to the newest outpost of this wonderful steakhouse here in Los Angeles (Beverly & San Vicente). Even though it is famous as a steakhouse, I order their fish as often as I order the red meat here. I highly recommend the seared tuna salad and the coconut cream pie for dessert. For carnivores, any cut of their steaks is sublime, but please order it less than well done so you can savor the actual taste of the meat that has been dry aged to perfection. The ambiance in this place is very East Coast masculine (read semi-formal), so if you are comfortable in that kind of environment you will be rewarded with excellent service and some of the best beef served in a restaurant.

Green Peas

Green Peas is such clever name for a healthy restaurant that I decided to try it based on the name alone. The exterior has several outdoor tables, so since today was a perfect summer day, I combined my car's oil change appointment with a vegan lunch to keep my body running smoothly. The menu has meat choices including beef and chicken, so this is a great place to come with friends who are either meat or vegan eaters. You can choose to have either meat or vegan protein in every dish, whether it is a salad, sandwich, pizza, or quesadilla for the same price. They use Gardein for the meatless versions of beef and chicken, and Daiya for the vegan cheese, so the quality of their products speaks volumes for the care they take in preparing their dishes. The coffee they serve is free trade and their vegetables are organic or local, so you can be green just by eating here.

This is a casual place, so you order at the counter and they bring it to your seat. Since everything here is under $10, they save on things like printed menus; the only menu is written on a huge chalkboard above the counter and the servers are also the busboys. Since I had come in for a late lunch, they seemed a bit overwhelmed with the crowd; only one of the four empty tables was bussed and clean. I chose to sit on the patio and wiped down the table myself with some napkins.

I ordered the Chicken Picatta Sandwich, made with Chicken breast, capers, garlic, fresh oregano, spinach, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, pesto aioli and grilled onions ($9.95). I had a choice of soup, or salad with my sandwich so I chose the special creamy potato with garlic.

The soup was surprisingly tasty and rich for a nondairy soup. It had enough of a smooth mouth taste to satisfy even a cream loving non vegan. If it had not been a summer day, I would have wanted to have a big bowl of this for lunch.

The Chicken Picatta Sandwich came on a lightly toasted baguette, but all their sandwiches give you a choice of other breads from whole wheat pitas, non gluten bread, and ciabatta, to sweet soft pretzel bread. Since I am so picky about baguettes, I thought it would be a good test and I am happy to say their baguette passed with enough texture to hold up to the sandwich and enough give to make chewing and biting easy. Since I chose the vegan Gardein chicken, I also got the veganaise and if I had not placed the order myself I would be hard pressed to say it was not the meat version. Although it was light on the capers, garlic, and grilled onions, it was a nice savory combination of ingredients that worked well together.

The server offered to wet wipe down my table when she brought out my meal, after I had done my napkin wipe, and it was nice to know they actually do get around to cleaning tables even if it takes them awhile to get to every table. The pots of flowers on the terrace are a pretty distraction from the bustling traffic on Sepulveda Blvd, and the free wifi seems to keep the place fairly full even in the later afternoon hours.

I was watching the line at the fast food restaurant across the street and thought if those people would simply cross the street, they could have a healthier fresh choice. It is sometimes a huge step to simply try something new, so for everyone looking to be a little greener, this is a great place to start, even though I didn't see any peas on the menu.

Tahiti, Bali, or Both?

With my upcoming trip to Greece I am getting my international travel fix soon, but like all travel addicts I am already looking forward to booking another trip.

Air Tahiti Nui has a deal for four nights at either the Radisson Plaza Resort in an oceanview room or the Manava Suite Resort in Tahiti, including airfare that starts at just $999. Both hotels include breakfast with the rate and hotel to airport transfers. The offer is good from November 1- December 11 (low season) or August 17-September 23 (high season); it rains in low season, so if you are going for sun and beach, go in high season. If four nights isn't enough (it isn't), you can include Moorea for 6 total nights starting at $1399 or Bora Bora starting at $2100.

With the movie "Eat Pray Love" coming out this August, many people may want to go to Bali. Singapore Airlines is celebrating its' 30th anniversary of service to Los Angeles, so on July 26, they are having a sale, five nights hotel, flight, AND TAXES* for only $1410. The vacation package runs through August 31, 2010, but book it as soon as it goes live because once the packages are sold, you are out of luck. The packages include airport and hotel transfers, 2 nights in Singapore at the five-Star Swissôtel The Stamford, 3 nights in Bali at the five-Star Nusa Dua Beach Hotel daily breakfast in Bali, half-day city tour in Singapore; full-day tour in Bali with lunch, and complimentary “Hop-On Bus” pass in Singapore from Sept. 1 – Nov. 30, 2010 and Jan. 1 – Mar. 31, 2011. This deal is equal to the cost of a flight alone, so to stay in five star hotels for the price makes this an incredible deal.

So Tahiti, Bali or both? Hmmm that is the question (I think my answer will be the third option).

*$110 of taxes are not included.

Extravaganza For The Senses

How would you like to donate to a local charity while going to one of the best parties in Los Angeles? There will be free flowing food and drinks from about 60 wineries including Grigich Hills, Piper-Heidsieck, and Stag's Leap, and over 30 restaurants including Boa, Chaya, and the Palm. Buy your ticket now to go to the Extravaganza for the Senses party at the Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood and you will be welcomed in without any velvet rope attitude.

You can also "gamble" during the party where will be a raffle for a trip to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas ($50 per ticket) and "shop" for the silent auction items like movie premiere tickets, sporting event tickets, and meals at restaurants which have all been donated.

All of the proceeds from your $100 ticket ($225 for VIP which includes valet parking, early entry and use of the VIP Lounge) benefit the Saban Free Clinic which operates four free clinic locations in Los Angeles.

Having a fun week-end while helping others get well is an epitome of a win-win situation.

230 Forest

Sometimes when you go back to an old favorite, it has changed (not in a good way) and you wish your memories had stayed intact without the annoying knowledge that everything changes. Happily I found that eating at 230 Forest in Laguna will remain a favorite. The Ahi Tuna Tartar tower made with papaya, crab and wasabi caviar ($14) is still as beautiful and tasty as the last time I ordered it over a year ago. The micro greens on top are a nice accent, and the combination of ripe fruit and fresh Ahi makes for a nice light appetizer on the crispy won ton skins sprinkled with a bit of hoisin and sesame seeds. This could be a meal if you are not that hungry.

I come here for this salad; the Blackened Tuna Nicoise, made with field greens tossed in a whole grain mustard vinaigrette, haricots verts, kalamata olives, hard boiled egg, and tomatoes ($18). The change they have made is to blacken the tuna, which adds a nice spicy touch to the previous incarnation of simply grilled tuna with all the same ingredients. I have a slight preference for the way they used to do it, but the new version "kicks it up a notch" and that is not a bad thing.

Even though Cindy & I shared the appetizer, neither one of us could finish our salads, much less order a dessert. We were happy to talk while sipping our glasses of Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay ($13) as we enjoyed the 80 degree beach weather. This is life as it should always be!

72 Hour Two Bunch Sale

Two Bunch Palms is famous (or infamous, depending on your take on history) as the old Al Capone hideout, the setting for a scene in the movie "The Player" and as a celebrity getaway spot.

Rates usually range between $200-$500 for a very luxurious private enclave in Dessert Hot Springs, but you have until Friday July 16, 2010 at 5pm PST to get your room almost free because they will give you a 60 or 90 minute spa credit for $200 and room rates start at only $200 (plus $17 resort fee and taxes). Enter code SPA2010 to get this deal under "promo code".

You can choose from the usual facials, massages, and mud baths, or try something more exotic like the water therapy (Watsu), breathwork, or Reiki.

Think of this as a way to incorporate something you need with something you want; a healing session and a place to sleep afterwards.

Drinking Beer for Charity

Ever wish you could drink* away the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? Looks like you will be able to at the end of this month.

Abita is teaming up with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board to promote a "charitable" Pilsner called SOS (Save Our Shores). The beer will be available through retail and restaurant outlets at the end of July and .75 of every sale will be used to fund relief efforts for the fishermen and women as well as environmental groups which are working to clean up the Gulf. The beer is 22oz and 7% ABV, so make sure you are not driving after you help charity.

*For teetotalers you can help by buying Tshirts, hats, decals, pins, magnets from the online store and 100% of your purchase price will go towards the SOS fund.

Katsuya

After going to Happy Hour at Katsuya in Brentwood from 5-7pm, where you can get appetizers and drinks for $7, you might want to stay for dinner tonight. With a robata grill that serves up grilled meats, fish and vegetables, this is a perfect place to take people who want a bit of everything or want that one special thing whether it is lobster or Kobe beef. If you can't decide, you can go with the tasting menu for $65 or the Omakase for market price that will showcase the specialties of the restaurant that Stark built.

Tonight is their 4th year Anniversary Celebration, so if you mention the "secret" words "4 Year Anniversary" in the Dragon Lounge, you will get complimentary sushi, drink specials and a rock sake shot on the house.

Remembering an anniversary is always a good thing, especially tonight.

James Perse 80% off

Ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I hate paying retail. Everyone loves a great deal, and when a brand you buy and love goes on sale for up to 80% off it is enough incentive to go shop. James Perse makes wonderfully soft casual clothes in the $50-$300 price range, so 80% off makes the prices go down to $10-$60! I love their t shirts which last forever and are my most travel friendly pieces since you can wear them alone or under a shirt as a layer, and yes they make clothes for men.

Even better than a sale is one which includes live music and the infamous Lake Street Creamery ice cream truck, you know the one which has donut flavored ice cream, (which can be scooped into a cherry soda to create a jelly donut float). All this starts today through Sunday at 585 Venice Blvd., Venice Beach, CA 90291 from 10am-7pm.

Just make sure you don't eat so much ice cream that you can't fit into your new clothes (or you can buy a larger size, just in case).

Westside Tavern

GastroPubs are the new darlings of Los Angeles, and with good reason since the idea of upscale casual food at affordable prices paired with innovative drinks, good wine and beer makes for a a tempting combination to nearly everyone.

Westside Tavern opened about a year ago in the Westside Pavillon space that was completely gutted and redone to house the Landmark Theatre. Even I love the independent film screenings here, I usually eat somewhere else, but not today.

I am so glad I finally tried the stylish tavern with a view of busy Pico Blvd. The people who work here make everyone feel welcome; the hostess was an efficient conductor of parties arriving, being seated, and guests leaving; my server Artur was personable, knowledgeable, and warm. The clientele ranges from young 20 somethings out for a leisurely lunch to seniors out celebrating a birthday. The bar area had several guys perched on stools watching the World Cup game on (muted) flat screen televisions. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals, and no one looked like they were out of place in this casual upscale eatery. Keep in mind that this is Los Angeles, where jeans can cost $300 and are considered appropriate business attire.

I chose the Grilled Vegetable Pannini made with Portabella Mushroom, Zucchini, Eggplant, Roasted Tomatoes, Goat Cheese, Pesto on Nine Grain bread ($14). It was the perfect combination of complex flavors and simple execution. The eggplant had been made with balsamic, giving a nice acid balance to the rice goat cheese and pesto, and the bread was nicely toasted but still tender. This is now one of my new favorite vegetable sandwiches.

The choice of a Daily Soup, Sea Salt Fries, Home Made Potato Chips, or Mixed Greens comes with the sandwiches, so I chose the Chicken and Rice Soup. I was surprised at the robust flavor of the stock and the hearty wild rice. The dark meat chicken was rich and tender and I could have easily made a meal out of this if I did not have the Pannini to eat.

All these flavors made my mouth dance with joy, but my belly was too full to finish my sandwich, much less order dessert, so I ended with a decaf espresso before heading out to my movie.

It is always fun to eat lunch or dinner and go to a movie, all the more when you can do it at a place literally next door to the cinema. At Westside Tavern, the food is good enough to come here just for a meal, and that alone is worth the price of admission.

Drink Eat Play at Paramount Studios

Have you ever wanted to hang out and party on the backlot of a movie studio? Well you get a chance to party like a star on July 31 from 3pm-7pm with unlimited beer, food, and music.

All this is brought to you by Drink Eat Play the event organizers who are throwing a "block party" on the New York Lot (of course, where else would you hold a block party?) on the Paramount Studios back lot. Not only do you get beers ranging from name brands like Fat Tire and Stella Artois, but there will be gourmet food trucks galore, tribute bands playing live music and DJ's to keep you dancing. You can also get discounted tickets to the event through Goldstar until July 10 (11am PDT) for only $30 (+$5.50 fee) instead of the at door admission price of $50.

Go party in "New York City" without going through airport scanners, lugging bags, or having to see graffiti, but just like in NYC, you may want to take a cab home.

Dancing Downtown

Mark your calendars for the next three Thursday nights if you want to support the art of dance and enjoy a discount on the art of fine dining after being entertained.

City Ballet of Los Angeles is showcasing some new choreographers in a summer dance series downtown at City National Plaza from 7-8pm July 8, 15, and 22. It's only $20 per person and the entire amount goes to benefit the scholarship fund for City Ballet of Los Angeles. Not only can you watch the newest rising stars perform unique pieces, but you also get a 30% discount at both Chaya and Drago Centro by showing them your ticket. It is handy that both restaurants are located directly below the performance space, so you can get a show and a meal without having to move your car, and that reason alone is enough to make this a date at least one Thursday this month.

Cake & Ice Cream in July

With the weather and the holiday both conspiring to sweeten the week-end, why not indulge your sweet tooth too?

July is National Ice Cream Month, yes it is an official designation, so it would be unpatriotic if you don't eat some ice cream this month, right? Head over to the new Sweet Rose Creamery in the Brentwood Country Mart and you can have your ice cream in a sandwich, a sundae, a float, a shake, or on a cone. With flavors that change daily depending on what is fresh locally, you can choose from specials like Nectarine Plum Frozen yogurt and Black Sesame non dairy ice cream made with Meji Soy Milk, to the more traditional like Malted Chocolate with Toasted Hazelnut Praline, Fresh Mint with Homemade Chocolate Chips, or the slightly twisted flavors of Earl Grey or Salted Caramel. Freedom is about choice and here you can choose how adventurous you want to be with your ice cream taste buds.

Even though you may live in Los Angeles, you may not have tried the restaurant Breeze in the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel, after all, we live here, so how often do we go out to restaurants in hotels in our own town? It may be time to go to local hotel restaurants more often because if you eat at Breeze on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights during July, you will receive a complimentary mini red velvet bundt cake. If you want more than one, the recipe is provided with the dessert should you choose to take on the challenge or replicating the talents of the baker. If you want to have a staycation at the Hyatt, you can also get one night free after staying for 3 consecutive nights through Labor Day, so you can play tourist in town but with insider knowledge of all the things to do and see. It could be fun to be a local incognito and see Los Angeles through fresh eyes.

No Need to Rush

Since the Culver City Farmer's market starts at 3pm on Tuesdays, I decided to the area earlier and have lunch at a place I have not tried before in downtown Culver City. I love Tender Greens, St. Amour, Honey's Kettle, and Ugo, but I had not ventured across the street to try any of the places on the North side of the street, so I went over to Rush.

With a very nice patio overlooking the busy street and a mix of clients ranging from shirt and tie office workers to a family with young children, this place seems to appeal to everyone. The interior is spacious and lively with music, flat screens above the bar, and a cool bar vibe.

I chose the seared mediterranean albacore tuna salad, made with greens, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, red potatoes, asparagus, hummus crisp ($13). My waitress was very pleasant and the bus boy was very efficient, but the salad left quite a bit to be desired once I tasted it. An over dressed salad is a sad thing, but a dry salad is nearly as bad; I think you can see from the picture that the spring mix was nearly completely devoid of any moisture. It was fresh, as were the slices of tuna, and the olives and artichoke hearts (from a jar) helped add some flavor, but the tiny bits of grilled asparagus and the cubes of potato only added to the blandness of the dish. The hummus crisp sounded like an intriguing addition, but in actuality it was as if the salad had been placed on top of a dry hard old pizza crust that had been smeared with hummus. So inedible I took one bite and left the entire thing on the plate.

Sadly I will not be rushing back here when there are so many other wonderful places nearby.
