French Friday

For the fans of Julia Child, or Julie Powell, or the movie Julie & Julia, there are some delicious ways to celebrate the icon's birthday tomorrow.

If you live in New York, you have probably heard of the CIA, that's the Culinary Institute of America, not the Central Intelligence Agency. The school has five restaurants on the premises so students can cook in a professional kitchen and serve diners as a kind of dress rehearsal for jobs they will be doing once they graduate. Their Escoffier restaurant specializes in French cuisine, so it is a natural place to honor the Godmother of French Cuisine in America with a menu featuring two of her signature courses, Sole Meuniere, which is the dish that made her want to take French cooking lessons, and her famous Boeuf Bourguignon. A four course dinner with a choice of either entree, a salad, cheese course, and dessert (along with coffee or tea) is only $35 per person until August 28, 2009.

If you don't live in New York and want to try out some of her recipes yourself, head over to your nearest Sur La Table for a free madeleine and cappuccino anytime after 11am on August 15th (her actual birthday). While you are nibbling and sipping, pick up a nice Le Creuset or the 40th Anniversary printing of her book Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

As Julia would say, Bon Appetit!
