Since the oil spill in the Gulf is wrecking havoc with wildlife, livelihoods, and food, many restaurants are doing their part by donating proceeds from either a dish or a portion of your dining bill starting today through June 12th to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. Many restaurants in Northern California and the East Coast have signed up but so far only Street and Bazaar are on board here in Los Angeles, so if you want to do something to help while supporting others who are putting their money where their hearts lie, dine out and contribute with a meal.
If you are addicted to Tumbler, the site which allows you to blog, share photos, videos and text, you can help just by logging on and donating to one of the charities that are helping mitigate the damage being done by the oil spill, like Save Our Gulf, National Audubon Society, or the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Tumblr will match every donation and the black dashboard that is in place will return to the familiar blue once you make a donation.
If only we could make the Gulf water blue again with just a click, but every donation helps and all progress is measured in small clicks.

Jet Yourself Blue for $599
If you want to be a jet setter for a month between September 8 and October 8, 2009, you can do it as much as you want to 50 cities on Jet Blue for only $599. The pass price includes all taxes and fees except for International travel and flights to Puerto Rico. Like all great deals, this offer is limited, so hurry and get your pass as soon as possible; this offer expires August 21 or whenever supplies run out.
The fine print is all pretty reasonable, including no name changes on the pass, membership into the True Blue program (you get 35 points for buying the pass), booking at least a three days in advance, only one city per day per flight, and at least three days advance notice for changes and cancellations of bookings. There is also a $100 penalty for no shows with any additional reservations canceled until the penalty is paid.
Where would you like to go? New Orleans? New York? Bermuda? Aruba? The wonderful part about having a pass for unlimited travel is that you don't have to choose, you can go to ALL the places you want during the month.
Go somewhere just to see what it's like, after all isn't that the whole point of traveling?

Hotels Around The World Around $100
In these days when going on vacation at any price is considered a luxury (even though it should not be), hotels around the globe are doing their best to entice you with rooms and rates that are so good that it would be a crime not to go.
Like all tourist destinations, New Orleans is struggling to recover tourist dollars; but they also have the added burden of rebuilding their reputation after the images everyone saw of the devastated areas. You can help by going and staying at Loft 523. It is as the name implies, a hotel of lofts which are approximately 600 square feet each with huge floor to ceiling windows, just 2 blocks to the French Quarter, and best of all with rates starting at just $109 a night. If you like modern minimalist decor with limestone and marble touches, this is the place for you. They even have a completely indulgent Milk bath package that includes an Archipelago Oat Milk Bath with a delivery of Krispy Kreme doughnuts! (My only suggestion would be to substitute beignets for the doughnuts).
For an adventure a little further from home, Jamaica's Treasure Beach has 31 secluded cottages and 29 rooms in shades of the sea and sky. The imaginative decor is fun and funky; it will bring a smile to your face and lighten your mood. Just the names of the cottages (like Octopussy and Jellyfish) will give you an idea of the whimsical creativity of this place that rents it's rooms for only $95 a night.
If you always wanted to go to Barcelona to see the fabulous Gaudi architecture, eat authentic seafood paella, and look over the shops in Les Rambles/Las Ramblas, check out Hotel Balmes. It is walking distance to both Les Rambles and Passeig de Gracia, and it has a beautiful pool and outdoor garden terrace that will soothe you after a day out and about on the streets. All this with rates starting at $105 a night is a steal.

NOLA
I had never been to New Orleans before Katrina, so I had nothing to compare it to when I finally experienced the city. My first stop was Cafe Beignet on Royal Street for their famous beignets (french donuts), chicory coffee, and the French cafe experience. Everyone goes to the Cafe Du Monde, but I prefer the cozier and more charming Cafe Beignet. There are several locations in the city; the Royal Street location has a fabulous outdoor garden patio.
Staying in the French Quarter, I chose the Hotel Monteleone and it was a wise choice. Far enough away from Bourbon Street to be quiet and odorless (a concern especially in warmer months), the Hotel has a gorgeous rooftop pool, comfortable reception area and a popular low key bar. It is also in a safe area with great restaurants literally across the street, like Mr. B's Bistro (from the Brennan brothers), the famous ACME Oyster House one block away, and the fabulous Galatoire's for that special occasion meal (order the Cafe Brulot for a flaming finale to your meal).
Since I couldn't eat ALL day, I walked around down to the waterfront and back up on Royal Street, famous for antiques and art galleries. The most striking exhibit of all that I saw, was the art of Craig Tracy (a native of the city). Painted Alive must be seen, and then seen again, to see that the animal painting is really a painted HUMAN body. Craig Tracy exhibits in New Orleans and was showing his work on Royal Street last year, although this year he is exhibiting in Florida as well; check his website for details (and to see his gallery of work).
The other uniquely New Orleans shop I loved was Maskarade, just off Jackson Square. They have unique handmade masks made out of leather by Morgan Hersey, as well as ceramic, feather, and tribal masks. For a truly personal expression at Mardi Gras or for any special party or event, this is the place to live out your fantasy, whether it is a scary one or a sexy one.
